In 2015, 90% of all Americans
owned a cell phone.
Young adults from 18-34 sent and received an average of
2,842 texts per month in 2011.
College students report texting during work hours, while taking a shower, during religious services, and even while having sex.
Many Americans believe that multitasking can make an individual more productive.
The participants (n = 99) were randomly assigned groups, and asked to watch a twenty minute pre-recorded lecture on an advanced research topic.
During this lecture, the students in the text messaging group were asked to send and receive text messages on a consistent basis.
The control group was asked to put their phones away and watch the lecture.
After the lecture, all students were given a survey created by us, which asked about text messaging attitudes, actions, and ability.
Once all the students had been given the survey, they were given a seventeen-question quiz, covering the information presented in the lecture.
This quiz did not count for a grade in their class.
